How to Survive a Long-Distance Marriage

How to survive a long-distance marriage

Views and ideas about marriage have drastically changed in the last 20 years, let alone the last 50 years. Marriage used to mean living under the same roof, sleeping in the same bad, eating around the same table ‘till death do you part’.

Nowadays, we are able to communicate with people around the world within seconds, allowing us more flexibility with our career choices, our location, and even our prospects for love. What once may have seemed like a marriage deal-breaker is now possible, and may even have its own perks.

Living apart is possible, but it requires commitment and fantastic communication between you both. If you are about to take the plunge into the world of long-distance marriage, no matter whether it is out of choice or whether you are waiting for your spousal visa UK to come through, here are some of our tops tips to make it work.

Use technology

Utilise technology more in a long distance marriage

Many people recognize that it is important for both sides of a relationship to take a step back from technology, social media and mobile phones in order to spend more quality time together. However, in a long distance marriage, you will have to utilise as much of this technology as possible.

Use technology to your advantage and start scheduling date nights with your partner, you can  even use skype whilst cooking dinner to get them involved in your daily life.

Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facetime, Skype and WhatsApp are just a few of the most popular apps you can use to stay in touch, sending your partner little snippets of your day and then video calling them in the evening will make them feel like a proper part of your life.

Manage expectations

Couples should always discuss how often they will talk or visit each other

Couples should always discuss what the long-distance marriage will look like.

For example, discuss how often you will talk, what some of your goals are and how often you will visit each other.

If you both go into the long-distance marriage with similar expectations then you will both know what the relationship will look like and will be able to recognize when the marriage may be diverting from its original course.

Letting each other know what you want from the marriage and what annoys you is always a great way to make sure your partner understands exactly what you want and can let you know exactly what they want.

Set an end date

By setting an end date, you are giving the long-distance marriage a time frame in which you are your partner can work towards. If the end date is a mystery, the marriage will seem much harder and will seem increasingly difficult as you will not know when the long distance part of the marriage will end.

Find out when the end date will come and arrange your efforts accordingly.

We can all suck it up and roll solo for a period of time, but knowing the end helps you deal with these issues together.
