Jim Ross, Chris Jericho, Jacksonville Jaguars owner reportedly launching new wrestling promotion

Wrestling fans may have another big option at the end of 2019 if plans move forward for a new wrestling promotion.

According to a report from SEScoops, Jim Ross and Chris Jericho have been working with their agent Barry Bloom on a new wrestling promotion.

The story noted that Shahid Khan, the billionaire owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham F.C. from the English premier league, is bankrolling the promotion. Khan’s son Tony is a big wrestling fan and is said to be hands-on with getting this promotion off the ground. The story also notes that Tony follows several wrestlers on Twitter including Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks and Marty Scurll. Furthermore, Jim Ross’ WWE deal expires soon and he has been (according to the report) sending out feelers to WWE talent, presumably to see if they would be interested in making the jump. The story also noted that Chris Jericho has been sending feelers to the New Japan Pro Wrestling side.

Rhodes, The Young Bucks and Hangman Page are said to be on board but Omega’s status is unclear. This is apparently what The Elite meant when they said that they would stick together when they make their next move. Obviously, this means WWE is unlikely for them. This also means that the company will burn a lot of money quickly since they will have several big names on board but the group is expecting big losses in the first couple of years. Ross has been dropping hints of something big happening next year in the wrestling business and this story would certainly qualify as something big. In this case, it could be a game changer for the wrestling business because the only way for a promotion to compete with WWE would be to have an owner that could put millions to get the company off the ground and that appears to be happening here.

The story also noted that there have been talks with AXS to secure a TV deal and the launch timeline for the promotion is 12-16 months away. For what it’s worth, the AXS part of the story was denied to us when we reached out for comment from a source who works there. Whether the AXS part of it is accurate or not, I would not expect them to confirm anything until contracts are signed.
