Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver rips WWE for not providing health benefits, independent contractor status

For those of you that missed it, you should go out of your way to watch Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” on HBO.

Oliver, a long-time wrestling fan, ripped WWE and for how they have treated their wrestlers. He noted the billions of dollars has made while not providing health insurance to wrestlers who have to go on the road all year.

The segment started off with Oliver talking about how great wrestling was and then he talked about the lack of health insurance and pensions. He also talked about the overwhelming amount of wrestlers that have died young.

Oliver also encouraged fans to make their voices heard on this issue and noted that fans did the same in the past whenever the company tried to give a big push to someone the fans were rejecting.

Much of what he said is what fans have felt for decades but the way everything was presented was well done. We’ll see if any of this forces to contemplate some changes, especially now that they are about to make more money than ever thanks to their TV deals with NBCUniversal and Fox. The piece did not paint in a good light at all.
