This was the third one-on-one battle between Klein and Iwatani. The first two matches saw Klein defeat the Japanese star. Last night, Mayu got her revenge on Klein, as well as the prestigious title around her waist.
The first meeting they had was this past April when the former champion defeated Iwatani in the semifinals of the WOH Tournament. The second was at the Stardom 5STAR Grand Prix last August where Klein once again came out on top.
Kelly Klein won the championship at ROH Final Battle when she defeated Japanese legend Sumie Sakai in a Four Corners match for the title. Last weekend after defending the title against former champ Sakai at Road to G1 Supercard: San Antonio, Klein stormed the announce area and demanded a match against Iwatani at the Bound by Honor per-per view.
After graduating from high school, Mayu attended a Dragon Gate event and fell in love with professional wrestling. She then contacted the manager of Stardom and was one of the original trainees for the promotion. On January 23, 2011, she debuted at Stardom’s inaugural show against fellow trainee Arisa Hoshiki.
Mayu has been there ever since winning numerous championships with the promotion. In 2017, she added Ring of Honor to her resume and is now the third women to hold the WOH Championship.
Last year, Pro Wrestling Illustrated ran their Top 100 Woman wrestlers publication and Iwatani was number 9. It should be noted she was the only woman in their top 10 that is not currently signed to WWE. The top 10 also included Japanese stars lo Shiria and Asuka.
The next big show for Ring of Honor is ROH 17th Anniversary on March 15 at Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas, Nevada. Perhaps a WOH Championship rematch could happen at the event.
