Meghan Markle news: Duchess of Sussex makes surprise solo visit after glimpse of baby bump

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, met with university leaders, academics, and students today at Kings College in London. The 37-year-old’s visit had not been announced by Kensington Palace, but later became apparent via Twitter. The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) shared news of her attendance on their official Twitter account – which has 6,270 followers. In a capture of the event which was uploaded to the social media site, Meghan could be seen sitting at a table with other attendees.

Meghan looked deep in conversation as she looked over at a fellow member of the group.

The Duchess of Sussex, who is often admired for her elegant style choices, wore a dark green ensemble, which had short sleeves.

The event saw the university leaders, academics, and international scholarship students explore how higher education can help to build a better world, the ACU said.

It included discussions of the role universities have in addressing issues such as human trafficking and modern slavery, gender equality and inclusion, peace and reconciliation – as well as climate change and resilience.

Beside the snap, a caption read: “Today we brought together university leaders, academics & #students to discuss how we can build a better world through #highered.

“We were honoured to be joined by HRH The Duchess of Sussex.

“Thanks to @KingsCollegeLon for hosting!”

In October this year, Meghan embarked on her first major royal tour with her husband Prince Harry.

During their trip to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the Republic of Tonga, Meghan discussed the importance of women’s education.

It came as she delivered a powerful speech at the University of the South Pacific in Fifi.

“Because when girls are given the right tools to succeed, they can create incredible futures, not only for themselves but also for those around them,” she said at the time.

Yesterday, Meghan gave a glimpse of her growing baby bump as she exited a carol service in Chelsea, London, with her spouse.

The mother-to-be, who is due to welcome her first child into the world in spring 2019, wore a blue dress.

Later, more details on Meghan’s outfit emerged – with the whole look reportedly costing almost £2,000.

Some of the stylish pieces she is thought to have worn may have included a double-breasted coat from the Canadian brand Mackage.

While this particular item is sold out on its website, it is available elsewhere on the internet for £789.95.

She is also thought to have carried a Jimmy Choo clutch bag – said to cost £850.

Actress

Meghan’s first television appearance in the USA was in an episode of the medical drama General Hospital in 2002.

She later moved on to roles in CSI, Without a Trace and Castle along with bit parts in Hollywood films including Get Him to the Greek, Remember Me and Horrible Bosses.

Meghan was also a “briefcase girl” on Deal or No Deal – but her most famous role was as Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits, which launched in 2011.

She was written out in the finale of the seventh series when her character got married, which aired in April 2018 – just before she got married herself.

Charity and humanitarian work

Meghan Markle’s career in television has gone hand-in-hand with her support for causes close to her heart.

She wrote about the stigma around menstrual health in an article for Time magazine and was a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada – with whom she travelled to Rwanda for the charity’s Clean Water Campaign.

And her commitment to gender equality has seen her work with the United Nations – receiving a standing ovation in 2015 for her speech to mark International Women’s Day.

Relationships

In September 2011, she wed film producer Trevor Engelson, who she began dating in 2004.

But the pair divorced two years later in August 2013, citing irreconcilable difference.

She was in a relationship with celebrity chef Cory Vitiello for almost two years, before they broke it off in 2016 but the two remain good friends.

And in June 2016, she met Prince Harry on a blind date set up by a mutual friend.

Their relationship began in October that year and just over one year later, on November 27, 2017, the pair announced their engagement.

They married on May 19, 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Meghan’s heritage

Some have claimed Meghan Markle is the first mixed-race member of the Royal Family.

Historians are still arguing about Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III.

But Meghan will be the first royal to openly embrace a mixed-race heritage.

She has written about the difficulties of being a biracial actress in Hollywood as she claims she is not black enough for some roles and not white enough for others.
