Stomach bloating: Six alcoholic drinks to avoid this festive season to beat the bloat

Stomach bloating has a few causes, from constipation and swallowing air while talking and eating, to a food intolerance or health condition such as irritate bowel syndrome (IBS). Excess wind is one of the most common causes of bloating, which is usually the result of the digestive system finding it harder to break down certain foods. With the festive party season in full swing, and many people hoping to fit comfortably in their party wear, avoiding a bloated stomach may be on the forefront of many people’s minds. While certain foods like beans, onions and broccoli that promote excess gas and bloating and are best avoided, when it comes to what alcoholic tipple to opt for there are some that are better choices than others.

Six alcoholic drinks to avoid if you want to beat the bloat are:

  • Beer
  • Wine
  • Cider
  • Prosecco
  • Champagne
  • Carbonated mixers

While all these drinks are typical festive bevies they’ve all been either fermented, are high in carbohydrates or high in sugar.

Past studies have reported how reducing carb intake can improve pain and bloating, particularly in people with IBS.

And added sugar isn’t a good thing to include in your diet overall, but it’s especially not good at helping you prevent bloat, advises US TV health expert Dr Mehmet Oz.

The fizz in carbonated drinks is created by carbon dioxide – a gas, explains Rennie.

It explains: ““Guzzling large amounts of carbonated drinks means you’re taking in a lot of excess gas (not to mention sugar).”

So what alcoholic drinks should you opt for?

Drinks that have gone through the distilling process, rather than a fermentation process are recommended

Distilled drinks usually come in the form of gin, vodka and tequila, but you should hold the carbonated mixers.

One food which crops up a lot during the festive season is Brussels sprouts, but these are notorious for their bloat-inducing effects.

This is because Brussels sprouts contain a couple sugar called raffinose.

Raffinose remains undigested until bacteria in your gut ferment it.

This produces gas in the abdomen and, in turn, makes you bloat.

Some experts believe taking supplements can help reduce bloating.
