The 1 Way Princess Eugenie Redefined Beauty Standards on Her Wedding Day

Princess Eugenie just did what no other royal has ever done before, all in the name of redefining beauty standards. For her wedding to Jack Brooksbank on Oct. 12. at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, the princess chose to display the scars from the corrective surgery that she had at 12-years-old for scoliosis (curvature of the spine). Since her surgery, she’s been very vocal in helping others facing the operation, noting that, “children can look at me now and know that the operation works. I’m living proof of the ways in which the hospital can change people’s lives.” She also expressed her desire to redefine beauty standards when it comes to scars on her wedding day.

Princess Eugenie told ITV in a prewedding interview that she “had an operation on my back when I was 12 and you’ll see on Friday, but it’s a lovely way of honoring the people who looked after me. It’s a way of standing up for young people who also go through this. I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars, and I think it’s really special to stand up for that.” True to her word, she wore a wedding dress that had a low back displaying her back scar, showing the world that scars certainly don’t need to be hidden. Now that’s what we call a princess.
