The Queen: Inside Buckingham palace where Her Majesty lives with husband Prince Philip

As the working headquarters of the Monarchy, Queen Elizabeth, 93, has lived at Buckingham Palace for many years. The once vacant property became the main royal residence in 1837 after Queen Victoria decided to renovate it, extending it and adding many of her own touches, such as the famous balcony where the royal family often gather to celebrate occasions such as Trooping the Colour. Consisting of 775 rooms, including 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 92 offices, 78 bathrooms and 19 state rooms, the iconic residence is known for its extensiveness. As well as this, there are also 188 bedrooms for the household staff.  So what does the Queen’s home look like on the inside?

The famous balcony

One of the most recognisable parts of the palace is the balcony which sits at the front of the residence, and is where the family often gather for special occasions, including weddings.

From Princess Anne and Mark Phillips big day in 1973, to Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson on their 1986 wedding day and Prince William and Kate in 2011, many royal couples have posed for photos after their nuptials on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Last month, the family gathered here for the Trooping the Colour to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday.

It’s unknown how many people the spectacular room sits, however, it’s likely to be in the 100s, as 170 other guests were invited to the special dinner.

The ballroom is also used for investiture ceremonies, carried out by the Queen and other senior royals including the Duke of Cambridge.

The private audience room

This room features heavily on the official royal Instagram account, with the Queen taking many of her weekly work visits here.

With its pale green walls, patterned rug and gold finished furniture, the room lives up nicely to the rest of the Palace.
