If you’ve been watching Drew McIntyre’s matches every week, then you probably noticed how he is always protected and they have made sure not to pin him.
Seth Rollins qualified for the World Cup on Raw in a match against McIntyre but it was a countout finish and done in a way to protect McIntyre. The show ended with McIntyre taking out Strowman with the Claymore kick.
Dave Meltzer discussed McIntyre’s push on Tuesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio and it looks like there are big plans in store for him.
“The whole Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre thing was supposed to be…it was supposed to be a takeoff on Shawn Michaels and Diesel,” Meltzer said, “When Shawn Michaels and Diesel were put together, the idea was to build Diesel to be a superstar because he ticked all the boxes. Hopefully, this one works better…We know [at least] half of it will be better because Drew McIntyre is a much better wrestler than Kevin Nash. Whether he can carry a company, you never know until a guy is put in that position.”
McIntyre’s first run with the company was lackluster but he admits that he was not ready because he was immature at the time. By all accounts, McIntyre is a different person these days and seems ready to embrace a main event push.
It seems like it’s only a matter of time before he’s in the mix for a world title push.
